Video Doorbells vs. Security Cameras: Do You Need Both?
They overlap, but they're not the same tool. Here's what each one does best — and whether you really need both.
Video doorbells and security cameras overlap — but they're not the same tool. Understanding the difference helps you build the right setup instead of buying twice.
What a video doorbell does best
A doorbell camera lives at your front door and is built around the moment someone approaches it. It:
- Shows you who's at the door in real time
- Lets you talk to visitors (or tell a delivery driver where to leave a package) through two-way audio
- Captures front-porch activity — including package thieves
What a security camera does best
A dedicated security camera is a broader surveillance tool. It:
- Watches larger areas: driveways, backyards, side gates
- Records continuously or on motion with longer clip storage
- Offers wider fields of view and, often, better night vision at distance
Do you need both?
For most homes: yes. The doorbell covers the front porch and the human moment — "who is at my door?" The cameras cover everywhere else: "what's happening on my property?"
If you can only start with one, start with the doorbell — it's where most day-to-day activity and package risk happens. Then add cameras for the back and sides as your system grows.
The good news
Your $1,200 equipment kit can include both a video doorbell and indoor/outdoor cameras. An agent will help you place each one for maximum coverage with zero blind spots.
